Buffalo, NY - February 8, 2010 - Ginger Kids, a Buffalo company offering products, programs and activities that bring families together, recently launched its “Healthy Foods, Healthy Families” initiative, educating children, daycare providers, parents, corporate wellness centers, and groups on the importance of leading healthier lifestyles.
The “Healthy Foods, Healthy Families” program perfectly aligns with government initiatives to promote healthier lifestyles for children and their families. In addition to Michelle Obama’s ongoing anti-obesity campaign, the USDA recently announced its $25M grant to improve the quality of the food program at schools, which are vitally important for children to reach their full potential. “Beyond the school hours, it’s also important to encourage healthy living in our after school programs, extracurricular activities, and at home,” said “Healthy Foods, Healthy Families” program founder Patricia Green. “Our program raises awareness and enthusiasm among children to live healthier lifestyles daily.”
“Healthy Foods, Healthy Families” launched its pilot program with the Community Action Organization of Erie County. The organization is dedicated to helping families improve the quality of their lives and achieve self-sufficiency. “The program is fantastic and we are excited at how quickly it has taken root,” said program coordinator Edward Jackson. “The students are genuinely excited to attend every week and are already learning and retaining healthy living information.”
The “Healthy Foods, Healthy Families” program informs children about overall wellness by combining nutrition, education, and fitness. The nutritional piece includes hands-on cooking lessons, food pyramid education, and healthy cooking techniques.
For the fitness component, Ginger Kids has “partnered” with the University at Buffalo Athletics department. Each week student athletes from the University at Buffalo visit the school to introduce the children to a different sport. The student athletes are great role models, and inspire children to pursue higher education. “Our community platform is to promote healthy living through exercise and nutrition and the “Healthy Foods, Healthy Families” program is an excellent avenue to spread our message,” said Assistant Athletic Director Sharon Stanford. “Our student athletes truly enjoy working with the children in the program. Each week we see the excitement in their eyes as they meet our student athletes and learn new sports. They are encouraged to eat balanced meals, stay hydrated, and exercise daily.”
The “Healthy Foods, Healthy Families” program also includes key elements from the nationally acclaimed “Body Works” program, under the direction of the US Department of Health & Human Services along with nutritional principles taught at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in NYC.
