So is giving back, says Chris McDonald, who founded in 2009 Making Life Grand, a national non-profit performing random acts of kindness every day.

“When we opened our first Mugshots Grill and Bar in Hattiesburg in 2004, we couldn’t have done it without a little help from our friends,” McDonald said. “Making Life Grand is our way of paying it forward.”

As the CEO of Ain’t Life Grand Investments, the parent company of Mugshots Grill and Bar, Old Athens Grill and Topher’s Rock ‘N Roll Grill, McDonald combined the acts of eating and giving back by donating a portion of every burger or gyro sale to his non-profit, Making Life Grand.

“Where the money goes from there is the best part,” McDonald said.

This year alone, Making Life Grand hosted its annual major fundraiser, a golf tournament, with proceeds sending a deserving Mugshots Grill & Bar employee to college.

Topher’s Rock ‘N Roll Grill and Topher’s for Teachers recognizes a local teacher and classroom of students monthly with a bundle of school supplies and a dessert party at Topher’s Rock ‘N Roll Grill.

Sports leagues and individual athletes around the southeastern United States -- from little league to big league, pre-k to college -- had their uniforms, travel, meals and sponsorships funded by Making Life Grand.

Numerous medical foundations received generous donations from the Making Life Grand non-profit, including but not limited to, the American Diabetes Association, the American Cancer Society, the No Aids Task Force, the Muscular Dystrophy and Multiple Sclerosis Societies, the March of Dimes March for Babies,

Overall, close to $50,000 was generously given to deserving recipients by the Making Life Grand non-profit. The result of over 450,000 Mugshots and Topher’s Burgers and Old Athens Gyros purchased by our loyal patrons in 2011.

“It’s our customers who are making it possible for us to give,” McDonald said. “They are the ones buying our burgers and gyros and making the contributions.”

Making Life Grand’s mission will always remain the same -- To Give Back.
