Cardiff, UK - Wednesday 22 June 2011: With the TED phenomenon sweeping the globe it may come as a slight surprise that the most popular TEDx talk to watch online at the moment took place as part of an event in Cardiff.
The talk on Google Consciousness given by Social Media strategists Rome Viharo and Maf Lewis as part of TEDxCardiff which took place at the Wales Millennium Centre earlier this year is based on the likelihood that Google may have become conscious, what it means, and what it represents as a metaphor for collective problem solving.
Since being uploaded to YouTube just under two weeks ago, the video has already received over 127,000 views and is featured on the official TED website as the most popular TEDx talk in the world today (22 June). It is also featured among the TEDx Editors eight favourite TEDx talks and appeared in YouTube’s Global Top Favourited Science & Technology videos for June 2011.
With over 7,500 TEDx talks in circulation online, it’s quite an achievement to stand out. Claire Scantlebury and Neil Cocker, organisers of TEDxCardiff are already in the throes of planning next year’s event and are overwhelmed by the response to the talk. 'The moment Maf (Lewis) came to me with the idea to give a talk on Google becoming sentient I knew we'd get a good response' explained Neil, 'but we never imagined that the video would go viral. To be picked up by the main TED website is absolutely fantastic, we're all feeling very proud.’.
TED is an annual event that brings together the world's leading thinkers and doers to share ideas that matter across a range of disciplines including technology, entertainment, design, science, humanities, business and development. The talks at the conference, "TEDTalks," are then made available to watch for free on TED.com. In the spirit of "ideas worth spreading," TED has created TEDx, a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.
The TEDxCardiff 2011 event, which sold out in under an hour, is one of thousands of TEDx events held across the globe but is the only one in Wales. You can watch the video and find out more about the event at www.TEDxCardiff.co.uk.

About TED and TEDxCardiff
TED is an annual event where some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. “TED” stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design — three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future. And in fact, the event is broader still, showcasing ideas that matter in any discipline.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxCardiff, where x=independently organized TED event; at our TEDxCardiff event, TED Talks, video and live speakers will combine to provide two sessions of high quality, thought-provoking inspiration. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
Speakers at the event included:
• Tori James – First Welsh woman to climb Mount Everest
• Pete Lawrence – co-founder of The Big Chill festival, and godfather of the “boutique” festival scene in the UK.
• Tim Robertson – Chief Exec of the Koestler Trust, promoting art in prisons.
• Maf Lewis & Rome Viharo – Viral marketing gurus pondering whether Google is becoming conscious.
• Alastair Reynolds – Award winning sci-fi writer, astrophysicist and former European Space Agency employee.
This independent TEDx event is operated under license from TED.
