Global Warming and the importance of Plants

July 21, 2011

Organisms must adapt to the ecosystem change and global warming. Science Daily (May 2011) This article suggest one helpful action in reponse to global warming is to plant trees and preserve forests.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) July 21, 2011 -- As Global Temperatures rise Scientist say that many plants and animals are shifting to more suitable sites.
Some plants and animals are responding to rising temperatures by migrating northward and upward to higher latitudes, however, they are unable to predict which species will be able to move far or fast enough to keep up.

Plants uses sunlight to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) and produce oxygen (O2) during photosynthesis thereby removing the most abundant greenhouse gas from the atmosphere. Other organisms that breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen are Algae and Photosynthetic Bacteria creating half of the oxygen (O2) in the world.
Deforestation is responsible for fewer plants to absorb the carbon dioxide going into the atmosphere, a rise in the earth's temperature, glaciers melt and water levels rise as a consequence.

Plants give off water through tiny pores in their leaves known as Evapotranspiration that cools the plant just as perspiration cools our bodies. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is absorbed for photosynthesis through the same pores (called stomata). On a hot day a tree can release tens of gallons of water into the atmosphere acts as a natural air conditioner, however, whenever CO2 levels are high the leaf pores shrink, this causes less water to be released diminishing the trees cooling effect.
Plants prevents soil hyper-saturation and under-saturation with water, their roots hold topsoil together, prevents erosion and plant shade maintain moisture.
Plant waste (branches & leaves) are decomposed by bacteria and the nutrients added to the soil as a fertilizer. They have the ability to move nutrients, gases and water between themselves and their surroundings.

Science Daily. (July 2009) Plants Internal clock can Improve Climate Change.
90% of plants genes are regulated by circadian clock endogenously generated which can be modulated by external factors such as sunlight and temperature. The clock coordinates when a plant flower and germinate a seed, also has the capacity to adopt to the physical environment. The ability of plants to tell the time is common to all living creatures and enables them to survive and may well be the key for plants to survive a rise in temperatures.

Collins, Chris D. (2007) Phytomediation - Methods and Reviews. Methods in Biotechnology Vol.23. pp.99-108.

Phytomediation: Using green plants to help clean up soils contaminated with toxic substances, heavy metals, radionuclides or toxic organic compounds, however, there are limitations, toxicity of petroleum contaminated soil will kill most plants.

Rhizoremediation: Karen E. Gerhardt et.al. (2009) Plant Science, Vol.176 (Issue 1) pp.20-30 Dept. of Biology, University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
Rhizoremediation involves both plants and rhizosphere microbes working symbioticly. Microbes degrade contaminants and promote plant growth under stress.

Dr. Frances Zvomuya (June 2011) University of Manitoba's New Research Facility to improved scientists' ability to use plants to reclaim contaminated soil.

In the literature claims are made that Citrus trees, Garlic and Geraniums have disinfecting properties, Pine and Oak trees in pots absorb pollutants, Rosemary and Thyme have insecticidal and stimulant properties and cacti and spider plants absorb electomagnetic radiation.

Gardening is the perfect antidote to the increasing stresses and pressures of the times, a form of relaxation, unwinding, refreshing of the spirit and most importantly make an Impact on the Environment.
