Process/Task Vs Outcome Result
For every goal you wish to achieve there is a specific process and task to achieve the desired outcome or result. The Process is your plan of attack. Understanding this most basic of concepts will bring you leagues closer to your goals. People have a tendency of focusing on the desired out come without evaluating an intelligent plan to get there. If you want to reach your goals you must have an overall plan and understand the specific tasks to get you there.
Specific & Measurable/Observable
Your goals must be specific. You must be able to measure your progress at every step of the way. Goals must be Observable. When a plane is set on autopilot it doesn’t get to its destination in a straight line. The computer is constantly making evaluations on how to get to where it is going. The plane makes minor adjustments to correct its heading based on its measurements. It is a constant set goal destination, evaluate progress and then readjust trajectory. This is the process. Whether it is a prop plane or a jet is the task.
Difficult but Realistic
It is not the setting of a goal that is too high right away that is the mistake, but your perception that the goal is too high that is the problem. Most individuals who set goals high, but in their heart believe that it is too high become frustrated and end up quitting. Go ahead and set those high goals, but take it in realistic and attainable short-term measureable steps. This way you will be empowered by your accomplishments and focuses on success instead of how far you are away from what you want. Mind frame is everything. Don’t set yourself up for failure.
Short Term Lead to A Long Range Goal
Become one with all the components that make up your goals:
■Physical: List your physical performance goals.
■Technical: List your technical goals.
■Mental: List your mental goals.
■Spiritual: List your spiritual goals.
Make sure that you evaluate your progress regularly. Make adjustments and reevaluate. Remember it is a process that you must constantly and diligently evaluate and adjust. You must be committed to your reaching your goals, but your approach should remain focused, but flexible.
Remember all the components: Physical, Technical, Mental, and Spiritual. Evaluate your progress periodically & re-adjust if necessary.
Goals Should Be Your Own With Coaches Input
You must live your own dreams, be in touch with your heart and express your passion through the pursuit of your dream. Others can offer you assistance, but in the end you must walk your own path and only you have the power to make it happen.
Practice & Competition Goals
Every second of practice is designed solely to reach your competitive goals. There should be no practice time devoted to anything other than reaching your specific competition goals. If you are going through this training to get in shape, then consider you’re reaching your goals as your competition day.
