Golden State Pops Orchestra Presents "Halloween Fright Night 8"
Welcome visit Our WebSite:
http://www.gspo.com (SAN PEDRO, CA) The Golden State Pops Orchestra (GSPO) is pleased to announce the return of its very popular Halloween Fright Night on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at the Warner Grand Theatre at 478 W. 6th Street, San Pedro, CA 90731. GSPO conductor Steven Allen Fox and Music Director Vic Pesavento will take the audience on a musical journey with a nod to various cultural traditions and their celebrations of All Hallow’s Eve. Special guest, internationally-known film and orchestral conductor Jeffrey Schindler, will conduct Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Tomorrow, Op. 33 featuring his wife, mezzo-soprano Bonnie Snell Schindler. GSPO encourages the audience to come in costume and there will be a DRESS to IMPRESS contest after intermission.
For Americans the Halloween experience includes witches, vampires, horror movies, scary ghost stories, apple bobbing, costumes and trick-or-treating. However, All Hallow’s Eve originated with the ancient Celts who believed that, at this time of year, the line between this world and the realm of the dead became very thin, allowing for spirits to move in between. The All Hallow’s Eve tradition of costumes and terrifying masks came about in order to fool any visiting harmful spirits. Many cultures have adopted this idea and then have tailored it accordingly. “Sometimes a holiday like this can become even more meaningful to us by taking a look back at where it originated. This Halloween our Fright Night performance is inspired by this history”, explains Maestro Fox. He goes on to say “After spending the Eve warding off these spirits on November 1st the families are able to celebrate the souls and spirits of loved ones who passed away. This history was the inspiration for this season’s Halloween Fright Night 8. Will you make it to sunrise?”
The special performance of Korngold’s eight-minute Tomorrow “makes for a perfect complement to the rollicking and frolicking of ghosts and ghouls”, said guest conductor Jeffrey Schindler. “The text of the work is a dialogue between two lovers soon to be separated by the grave.” Erich Wolfgang Korngold was an Austro-Hungarian Oscar-winning film composer during the 1930s and 40s. Korngold epitomizes the “Golden Age” of Hollywood Film Music, with such scores as The Sea Hawk, Captain Blood, Robin Hood, etc., as part of his lengthy list of credits. As a celebrated European operatic force, Korngold used his success in Hollywood to support Jewish friends and refugees during WWII. This concert will also feature a Christopher Young composition, Concerto to Hell from the film Drag Me to Hell - featuring Mark Robertson, the violin soloist from the soundtrack.
“We wanted to make this year’s Fright Night fit in with San Pedro’s annual celebration of Dia de los Muertos and the PV Rotary’s LA Fantasy Film Festival”, said Linda Grimes, GSPO’s Executive Director. “Friday night, there will be a screening of the 1979 'Dracula' starring Frank Langella, on Saturday Sixth Street will be closed for Dias festivities and on Sunday the Warner Grand will be showing all three Twilight films. If you bring a ticket stub from Dracula, we will give you a 10% general admission and reserved ticket discount for Saturday’s GSPO concert. We hope the community will include us in their Halloween weekend plans.”
