Goodbye to Age Discrimination and Workers Comp

A recent story out of Australia suggests that things may be starting to change. Perhaps our progressive world is getting up to speed with the idea that discrimination of any kind is really not okay. Perhaps this recession that most countries can’t seem to pull themselves out of has had an effect. The question is; has Workmans Comp caught up too?

Well, in at least one section of Australia it most certainly has. Starting in October of this year, 2011, Western Australia has legislated to abolish age discrimination in this realm: This will entitle all workers to Workmans Comp regardless of their age and it will make a significant and positive difference to all.


Prior to this, their Workers Comp system did not extend benefits past the age of 64 or 65. As we all know, today’s economy has led to the near extinction of the age of retirement that previous generations took for granted. Western Australia currently sports low unemployment and thus needs to ensure that their skilled, experienced (older) work force can continue to contribute with the safety net of having Workmans Comp under them.

Another striking shift is the new legislation that makes sure that any employees injured on the job or at the workplace will be protected even when their boss did not have insurance. Thankfully, Workers Comp reports that the number of employers who fail to fulfil these obligations are very few. Now, everyone will be safe in the knowledge that Workmans Comp is there for them should they need it. A tightening up of the Workers Comp resolution system will also happen, with disputes that go to arbitration moving along more quickly, easily and smoothly.


It seems that the people spoke out and the government and Workmans Comp listened. Improvements that were sadly needed will now be addressed.
