http://www.highlightspr.co.uk Michael Peacock and Richard Carter started their own business; Peacock Carter while studying at Durham University where they jointly competed to build University based websites. A natural complementary partnership ensued with Michael specialising in programming and Richard concentrating on the design side. After winning a number of projects in the region, the pair decided to take a leap of faith by leaving their respective Durham City bedrooms to move the expanding business into the Design Works building in Felling, Gateshead.
Now, just two years on, the pair have received their largest piece of work to date securing a national contract to provide Wiki technology for the government funded websites, NHS Choices, businesslink.gov.uk and Directgov.
The prestigious contract came about thanks to a number of books that the pair have written on technical website design and programming. One such book, written by Richard on the subject of MediaWiki, the software behind the free online encyclopaedia Wikipedia, was noticed by government officials who then requested more details from the pair about their work. The work for the three websites requires Peacock Carter to create interactive pages to allow the public to add their own content such as details of self help health groups for NHS Choices, “how to” business guides for businesslink.gov.uk and organisational contact details for Directgov. The idea behind this new style of website is to help reduce government costs and give the public more accountability and say on matters affecting them and their local community.
“The new contract with the government has helped the business grow even more than we had anticipated,” said Richard. “Our new plans now include taking on additional staff in the coming months, competing for more national contracts and maintaining our reputation as leaders in Wiki sites and search engine optimisation.”
Business partner Michael was also delighted with the new contract, “It’s amazing to know that the government trusts us to put together these three revolutionary websites”, he said. “Winning this sizeable project is a great testament to our expertise, and a fantastic challenge for us as a small business ourselves.”
