(Brooksville) Hernando County Landfill is celebrating the completion of its Landfill Cell #3 and increasing recycling awareness with tours of its recycling MRF (Materials Recovery Facility) now managed by SP Recycling Corporation. The Grand Opening gets underway Thursday, September 2, 2010 at 9:30 am with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.
The Landfill has been serving the County at its present location since 1992. With increasing population and the need for more space, the County began construction on Landfill Cell #3 about four (4) years ago at a cost of approximately six-million dollars. The new cell has the capacity of holding 3.4 million cubic yards of waste. Life expectancy of the cell is fifteen (15) years.
The County is placing renewed emphasis on recycling to eliminate recyclable tonnage from the Landfill. SP Recycling Corporation is now managing the County’s Recycling MRF. SP Recycling Corporation is a 30-year old multifaceted recycling company operating twenty-two (22) plants, twelve (12) of which are in Florida. (www.sprecyclingflorida.com)
“The company processes and markets the recyclable commodities for the County,” said Scott Harper, Director of Hernando County Landfill.
SP Recycling Corporation is the procurement arm of SP Newsprint Company, LLC – the Nation’s largest producer of 100% recycled newsprint. SP Recycling is also known for its fundraising-recycling program offered throughout the southeast. The company places recycling containers at community locations ranging from schools to churches to mobile home parks and HOA’s to clubs and pays those hosting the containers for the paper they provide for recycling.
“We are pleased to be able to serve the citizens of Hernando County and meet their increasing recycling needs,” said Tom Kimsey, SP’s Florida Regional Manager.
Items recycled in Hernando County include newspaper, paper, phonebooks, cardboard, plastic bottles #’s 1 & 2, steel and aluminum cans. Hernando County Landfill also accepts electronic or E-waste.
Hernando County residents are invited to learn more about their County’s WasteStream by joining in the celebration and touring the facility located at 14450 Landfill Road, Brooksville. Tours of the Recycling MRF get underway at 10:00 am and will conclude by 2:00 pm.
