Meet “Bapu Nandkarni”, one of such distinguished veteran cricketer and the representative for Maharashtra in the Ranji trophy for 10 consecutive years on Great Bhet, Saturday, 10th December 2011 at 9:30 pm only on IBN-Lokmat.
Rameshchandra Gangaram ‘Bapu’ Nandkarni born on April 4, 1933 in Nasik is mainly known as the economical bowler of team India because he had a low economy rate of less than 2.00 runs per over. He was zealous about cricket since his childhood and commenced playing cricket in the Rohinton Baria Trophy for Poona University in 1950-51. Nandkarni made his first-class debut for Maharashtra cricket team in 1950-51 and scored his first century against Mumbai in 1953 in the famous Barbourne stadium where he made 103 runs and played a tremendous innings. Bapu’s dream of being selected in the national Indian cricket team was fulfilled in 1955 when he was picked to play a test against New Zealand in the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium. After becoming the captain of the Maharashtra team he became well known for bowling an unerring line to the batsmen which made them impossible to score runs. He had a unique method of practicing on the grounds. He used to put a coin on the pitch and tried to hit the coin with each delivery. It made his bowling sharp and thus made him succeed in scoring many records that are still stored fresh in the golden box of Indian cricket. His one of the best known records was against England in Madras test in 1963-64. He bowled 21 consecutive maiden overs with 131 dot bowls in a row. He represented Maharashtra in the Ranji Trophy from 1951 to 1960 and shares a memorable record for scoring 201* and 6 wickets in only 17 runs against Saurashtra in 1958. His career’s highest score was 238* that he made against Delhi in 1960 semifinal.
