Greater Restrictions for High-Risk Auto Insurance Group Approved

Beginning Michigan drivers may soon have greater restrictions on when and with whom they can drive.

Lansing, Michigan, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) December 8, 2010 --Legislation that is now headed for the desk of Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm would institute changes that would strengthen the laws applying to one of the state’s high-risk car insurance group: beginning drivers.

Teenagers tend to get slapped with high Michigan auto insurance costs because of their lack of experience. Coupled with statistics showing that some of the urban areas of the state have the nation’s highest average cost for coverage, this means that low-cost insurance policies for younger Michiganders are likely few and far between.

But the bill that gained approval from the Michigan Legislature last week aims to bring the state’s graduated licensing system closer to the model that has been advocated by federal legislators in an attempt to temper teenagers’ high accident rate. If Gov. Granholm signs the bill into law, beginning drivers in certain stages of the graduated licensing process will have greater restrictions on when and how they can drive.

Changes that would come would affect when and with whom a beginning motorist could drive. The state already has a midnight cutoff, but that curfew would be moved up to 10 p.m. In addition, they would be prohibited from driving with more than one person who is under 21 and is not a part of their immediate family, unless it is to or from a school-sanctioned event.

Whether Ganholm will sign the bill into law is yet to be seen.
