Energy Tax Credits
Going Green is here to stay!
This is evident in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 due to the fact that it has extended many consumer tax incentives originally introduced in the Energy Policy 2005. For those of you who may not be familiar with the benefit of a tax credit vs. a tax deduction, here is the explanation: A tax credit subtracted from the tax you owe after your taxes have been calculated whereas a tax deduction is subtracted from your income before your tax is calculated. An average tax deduction will save you about 20% of its value so lets say the deduct is one thousand dollars. You will save about two hundred dollars in taxes. A one thousand dollar tax credit is subtracted from what you owe so you save the entire one thousand dollars. So a tax credit reduces tax dollar-for-dollar, while a deduction only removes a percentage of the tax that is owed. Consumers and homeowners can itemize purchases on their federal and state income tax form, which will lower the total amount of tax they owe the government.
Energy-efficient appliances and products provide many benefits in our society. It lessens our carbon footprint by lowering energy bills, increasing indoor comfort, and reducing air pollution along with saving the consumer hundreds of dollars.
Over and above federal tax incentives, consumers and homeowners might be eligible for utility or state rebates, in addition to state tax incentives for energy-efficient homes, vehicles, appliances and equipment. Visit your state’s Energy’s web site to find more information on specific state tax information or visit www.energy-freeenergy-energytips.com/taxrebates.
The following quote is from the IRS. If we as consumers take advantages of tax credits, rebates, grants and financial opportunities, we should not only gain tremendous pleasure in know that we are helping our planet, but we are also saving ourselves hundreds if not thousands of dollars…
"Individuals can make energy-conscious purchases that will provide tax benefits when filling out their tax returns next year. The new law provides tax credits for making your principal residence, which must be in the United States, more energy efficient and for buying certain energy efficient items." -- From the IRS
