Alexandra Faer Bryan, R. N., wrote "Green Kitty" as an aid for parents or grandparents to help explain dementia and Alzheimer's memory loss issues to children. It is aimed at the age group of 8-12 year olds and few books target that age group about this illness. She saw the need for this work when employed at an assisted living center and because of friends telling how upset their child was when their grandparent didn't recognize them. She hoped it would be a resource that would help to prepare children for the day that happens. The book is about a grandmother recently placed in assisted living and her visiting grandchild and subtly weaves caregiving suggestions into the storyline. It is full of laugh-out-loud true animal stories.
Self published, "Green Kitty" was awarded one of six finalist positions by USA Book News last year for "Best Book 2011" in children's fiction. The author is thrilled that it placed in the category of fiction even though it was written as an educational book.
"A wonderful book for a child who spends time with a family member who has Alzheimer's. Entertaining and educational. A must-read! Author Alexandra Faer Bryan hit a home-run with this book!

"What I liked best about the “Green Kitty” is that it shows how, despite the illness of Alzheimer’s disease, a strong bond can continue within the family. The book fosters respect and dignity for an elder, highlighting elder value irrespective of Alzheimer's disease and Dementia related losses. That, in itself, makes the book a good buy."
