GRUPO RIZOMAS LAUNCHES ONLINE MAGAZINE FOR COSTA RICA AND THE NEOTROPICS
Grupo Rizomas, a boutique publishing company founded by expats Stephen Duplantier, Ph.D, former professor of journalism/media arts, and Patricia Spinelli, writer/producer, has released NEOTROPICA, The Costa Rican Magazine for Living in the New Tropics.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) July 7, 2010 --
SAN RAMON, COSTA RICA (July '10) NEOTROPICA is the high quality, digital magazine published in Costa Rica for Central America and the rest of the world. Although the content is primarily local, it encompasses the world of ideas and experiences of the entire region known as the Neotropics, which is the area of the Western hemisphere located in the middle of the globe between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.
With the recent influx of people from the global north, Duplantier and Spinelli saw a need for a publication that was not only intellectual, but humorous.

http://www.neotropica.info “There is nothing quite like NEOTROPICA. It's hugely ambitious and as rich as a Costa Rican rain forest,” says Duplantier, “and at the same time, it's a city, country, travel, literary, intellectual, and news magazine. Although it relates directly to life in the Neotropics, it is also for those imagined and desired places, bio-regions, and autonomous zones where seekers create an ecology of understanding.”
NEOTRPICA is predominately in English, with occasional translated articles in Spanish in French.“NEOTROPICA appeals to educated and sophisticated readers who will engage and be challenged by the in-depth articles, original artwork and photographs, not to mention the stunning visual design,” Patricia Spinelli commented. “We have tried very hard to create a high-concept magazine that addresses historical, cultural, and contemporary issues both in Costa Rica and the entire Neotropical region.”
The first issue titled “The Imagined Geographies of Paradise” is comprised of 112 pages of articles, photographs, illustrations, and analyses of the concept of paradise and utopia/dystopia. Articles range from Christopher Columbus's blunderings into a new world paradise, to Costa Rican astronaut Franklin Chang's exploration of the hoped-for utopia of space exploration.
The second issue titled “The Banana Chronicles” is due to be released on-line at the end of August. From Sam Zemurray, the ruthless czar of the United Fruit Company, to Josephine Baker dancing topless in Paris wearing only a G-string of firm bananas, this issue addresses the century of exploitation of Central America by the giant fruit companies from several points of view. “Expats should know what every Costa Rican high school student learns about the fruit companies' occupation in the Americas,” Duplantier adds in closing.
