One of our guards at GSL’s office in Peterborough, Lee Mindham, has just seen a book he co-wrote published and available for sale. The biographical book documents the events around a botched robbery in Los Angeles in the late ‘90s. His co-author was an officer in the Los Angeles Police Force at the time.
After a botched robbery at a Bank of America branch in North Hollywood, two robbers armed with fully automatic assault rifles and wearing full body armour, fired more than 1,100 rounds as they battled police. Eleven officers and two civilians were wounded in the exchange of fire, but none fatally due to the actions of the officers on the ground. The two robbers, Emil Matasareanu and Larry Eugene Phillips Jr., were killed by gunfire.
Officer John Caprarelli was one of the first officers at the scene which was captured by several broadcasting organisations. Before a live national TV audience, he confronted one of the robbers, provoking an exchanging of gunfire before the gunman fell.
Officer Caprarelli was awarded the LAPD’s highest honour, the Medal of Valor, as well as a National Top Cops Award. In this fitting memoir, the readers are offered a rare glimpse into the officer’s private life along with vivid recollections of events during his 27 year career with the LAPD culminating with a detailed breakdown of his thoughts and actions during the now infamous bank robbery.
Lee, aged 40, said: “I was inspired to help John Caprarelli when he approached me in January 2011, about his desire to publish his memoires. As he recalled his often painful memories of his time on the force and the impact upon on his home life with such honesty, I realised that to turn him down would have been an insult to his years of service and his actions on February 28th 1997 and his family.
“All profits from my portion of the sales are being donated to the Los Angeles Police Historical Society (the police museum) as they receive no state funding and rely on public donations to remain open. They house an amazing array of historical items about the LAPD from over the years”.
The book is currently available on Amazon's Kindle site however UK customers can order paper copies from Lee directly. Please allow 3 weeks for delivery.
