Mr. Todd Dennis, City Councillor (Ward 6), and some 40 participants in the Walk for PKD at Guelph's Riverside Park on September 10 were greeted with sunshine and blue skies.
Hosted by the newly launched Hamilton-Guelph Chapter of the PKD Foundation of Canada, Walk Coordinator, Carrie Manson, said that the Walk exceeded expectations.
"We could not have hoped for a better turn-out for our first fundraising event, and the online donations were generous. It was super to have the support of Councillor Dennis to cut the ribbon," Manson said.
"And the sponsorship of Money Direct, Re/Max and Boston Pizza really enhanced the event. We are fortunate to be in a community that really cares."
Doug Larson, an award-winning ecologist and University of Guelph professor emeritus, contributed some rousing guitar music before the ribbon cutting ceremony which was also attended by Jeff Robertson, Executive Director of the PKD Foundation of Canada, and Shiona Mackenzie-Morrison, Hamilton Chapter Coordinator.
"The Hamilton-Guelph Chapter has only been in existence for two months, so raising almost $4,900 is an impressive achievement," Mackenzie-Morrison said.
The Hamilton Chapter of the PKD Foundation of Canada offers two-hour informational support meetings to PKD patients, their families and friends every other month. The next meeting will be in November at the First Unitarian Church of Hamilton. For details, call 1-877-410-1741 or email hamiltonchapter@endpkd.ca.
