Gullah/Geechee Seafood Festival to Be Held on Historic St. Helena Island!

WHERE: SC Coastal Community Development Corporation Highway 21 and Dr. Martin L. King Drive, St. Helena Island, SC, Gullah/Geechee Nation

(12 October 2010, St. Helena Island, SC) Gullah/Geechee Fishing Association will host a major membership drive and edutainment event, the first annual, Gullah/Geechee Seafood Festival. The festival will take place from Noon until on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at the SC Coastal Community Development Corporation on historic St. Helena Island, SC at the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Drive and Highway 21/Sea Island Parkway. Cast net making and fishing tradition demonstrations and exhibits will be on site throughout the day. Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation will do a histo-musical presentation at 3 pm and others will follow. Gullah/Geechee, crafts, books, and CDs will be on sale. DJ Kwame Sha of All Mobile Productions™ (AMP™) will spin as traditional Gullah/Geechee seafood meals are prepared for all in attendance. There is FREE Admission for everyone. Seafood dinners are $10 per plate.

This will be the first annual Gullah/Geechee Seafood Festival which is the major membership and community awareness drive for the Gullah/Geechee Fishing Association. The association is open to all Gullah/Geechee fishermen and women and their families. The association focuses on education about Gullah/Geechee fishing traditions and advocates for the rights of those of African descent working in the seafood industry in the region to insure that our waterways and fisheries can be sustained and Gullah/Geechee traditional seafood harvesting practices will continue.
