Gullah/Geechee Seminole Days Declared in Florida

Gullah/Geechee Days Declared in Ft. Lauderdale, FL

The living link to Africa in North American has come more alive with recognition being given in Florida on Friday, August 19, 2010. For the first time in history, the Gullah/Geechee, Seminole, and Maroon people are reuniting in that state as a part of the “Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival™ 2010. The event started with a journey from historic St. Helena Island, SC down the coast of Florida. Along the way, stops were made a several areas that are historic and sacred for Gullah/Geechees and Native Americans.

At Ft. Mosé in St. Augustine, FL, Senator Tony Hill presented Queen Quet, Chieftess and Head-of-State for the Gullah/Geechee Nation with a proclamation for her vision and leadership of the Gullah/Geechee people. After the reception with Senator Hill and staff of this historic site, the group proceeded to Ft. Lauderdale, FL where the city commissioners declared August 19-22, 2010 as “Gullah/Geechee Days” in honor of the historic “Gullah/Geechee Seminole Maroon Reunion” taking place in their city. They call for all to celebrate these historic days.

Friday, the group will continue the journey to Hollywood and Miami, FL to reunite with the Seminole Nation. On Saturday, August 21, South Floridians will have the opportunity to be a part of this historic event by going to the The African American Research Library and Cultural Center, located in the Rev. Samuel Delevoe Jr. Park, along the banks of the North Fork of the New River. The event will be held there from Noon to 7 pm on that day.
