Gym etiquette - What is and isn't' acceptable?

March 24, 2011

There is a certain code of conduct expected of us in a gym environment which many are either unaware of or choose to ignore. This is my experience of general gym behaviour and social faux-pas.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) March 24, 2011 -- As many of us are aware there is a certain code of conduct expected of us when we enter public areas where we are in close proximity to others in a rather confined area. It is an unwritten rule that certain things are deemed rude and inappropriate in a gym environment. In this article I will discuss some of the social faux-pas associated with gym-attendees and hope you can appreciate the relevance and relate to them in your own experience.

Firstly, I would have to say one of my main personal grievances is when you observe excessive noise coming from the guy lifting the 'much too heavy for him' weight and crashing it down to get everyones attention probably executing the movement with very poor form and control. I definitely advocate the use of breathing out on the effort and breathing in on recovery of weight lifting but when this becomes far too vocal it becomes somewhat a distraction. As far as crashing the weight down is concerned I think this person is either lifting beyond their capabilities or should really use an experienced spotter to help them train to absolute fatigue. It is usually the younger generation who feel the need to show-off and impress their friends or compete with other members of the gym to see who can lift the most weight but I think even some experienced gym-goers are guilty of this.

There are those who use equipment merely as a place to sit and text and make phone calls and you often wonder why they bother coming when they seem to have no interest in actually working-out. Some see the gym as more of a place of social interaction which is fine providing they respect the privacy of others especially those who have made it abundantly clear through the use of headphones that they do not wish to be disturbed. You will often see a few people posing by the mirrors especially those who have just finished a weights session although to be honest they usually spend more time admiring their own reflection than actually lifting weights in my opinion.

Finally lets not neglect to mention those who spend far too much time using a piece of equipment when it is highly obvious that others wish to use it as well. A queue may form and still the individual is oblivious to others waiting around him/her or perhaps they feels reluctant to leave the apparatus because they believe I pay my membership i'm going to pretend i'm the only person here. I would suggest keeping usage of cardiovascular equipment down to around 20 minutes at busy periods and resistance machines users should alternate using the equipment every other set since a lot of times the user will be resting in between sets. With recovery periods of anything from a minute up to 5 minutes this provides sufficient time for another member of the gym to perform at least 1 set before swapping back again.
