Hailsham & Hellingly Masterplan Still In The Hands of Wealden District Council

June 4, 2010

Government policy, as set out in the South East Plan, is that local planning authorities (in our case Wealden District Council) should “encourage community-led local planning” and, following......

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) June 4, 2010 -- ......public consultation early last year, the Hailsham and Hellingly Masterplan was approved by the Town Council and submitted to Wealden District Council for adoption as supplementary planning guidance for the development and the regeneration of the town centre through to 2026.

Masterplan proposals include:

- Improved town centre roads, and a major eastern relief road.
- Making the High Street and town centre pedestrian-friendly.
- A community-based diagnostic and treatment centre with GP surgeries

- A community park with a 500-seat concert hall, multi-use hall for clubs and societies, library and art gallery

Following publication of the Masterplan, the Town Council has held discussions with developers about improved shopping and leisure facilities, and has received indications of support for additional healthcare and education provision.

Furthermore, Wealden District Council has announced its decision to concentrate it’s headquarter premises on a single site in Hailsham. The Town Council has consulted with the District Council on its Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment, seeking to identify land available for development, if needed.

District Councillor David White, Chairman of Hellingly Parish Council and one of the principal authors of the Hailsham & Hellingly Masterplan commented, “It is evident that much of what is identified in the Masterplan is deliverable and, although there are threats to the town from development, there are also opportunities. It is important that we minimise the former and maximise the latter.”

The Mayor of Hailsham, Councillor Robin Kempe, describing the Masterplan as bold and challenging, but practicable, said, “The Hailsham & Hellingly Masterplan proposes a strategic framework showing how growth and change could occur in Hailsham over the next 15 years and how to ensure that development takes place in a considered manner to deliver community benefits for the town as a whole.”

He added, “We’ve listened very carefully to feedback from residents and businesses during the initial stages of the document’s draft, who themselves have recognised that Hailsham is well-placed to face challenges from future town development.”
