Hailsham Town Council Identifies New Skate Park Site

February 9, 2010

Hailsham Town Council has identified a site in Hailsham suitable for the construction of a BMX and skate park, which has long been an ambition of the council and the town’s younger residents.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) February 9, 2010 -- Working in partnership with such organisations as Wealden District Council, Sussex Police, the Safer Wealden Partnership, Youth Development Service and Hailsham Youth Council, the creation of the site will deter skaters from using public footpaths and complement existing leisure provision for residents in Hailsham. Young people will be involved in the design of the site.

The Mayor of Hailsham, Cllr Dr Ian Haffenden, said “The preferred location has the benefits of being centrally located and is a site that can be easily monitored and accessible to BMX bikers and skaters.”

He added “The fact that the council is carrying out these discussions and exploring funding sources is a great example of how we have listened to the needs of local residents. Rollerblading, skateboarding and BMX biking are favourite pastimes for young people and, with safety for members of the public as a major concern, the need for this facility must be addressed accordingly.”

Cllr Bryan Burchmore, chairman of the Environment, Leisure & Resources Committee commented “The new skatepark is just one of the improvements being carried out by the Town Council in parks and public open spaces across Hailsham.”

“Following a visit by myself to the proposed site in order to examine the feasibility of constructing a BMX and skate park there, the Council is now looking into various funding options.”
