Hair Drug Testing for Pre-Employment Screening on Rise Nationally

According the business research firm Corporate Executive Board, eighty top corporate recruiters reported that their companies require a pre-employment drug test of every applicant before they can be hired.

Hair drug testing is on the rise among small business owners simply because it is the most secure way to be able to determine if someone is using drugs before they are hired by a company. It is also the easiest way to collect a sample from a donor since the only requirement is a strand of hair which can be collected in the recruiter’s office and sent to the lab in minutes.

The difference between urine testing and hair drug testing is the length of time in which the drug is excreted from the body. A urine sample, for instance, can only determine if the person ingested drugs within seven days of the drug test.

A hair sample can determine drug use for up to ninety days. In other words, hair drug testing provides for a longer timeline whereas urine can only detect drugs within seven days of usage.

A urine sample can be diluted with water and come up negative for drugs and drug users have hundreds of other tricks up their sleeves to pass urine tests, but a hair sample cannot be tampered with and since it can be collected in the recruiter’s office there is no chain of custody issue to deal with.
