Is Martelly in Town to Milk His Daddy’s Cow?: The Diaspora
By Smith Georges
New York - President Michel Martelly is coming to New York this Sunday, June 26, 2011 for three main reasons: A Lunch-Fundraiser at NYU, a public rally with the Haitian Diaspora at the Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, right across the United Nations (47th Street & 1st Ave) and another fundraiser in Wall Street at the Broad Street Ballroom at 7:00 pm. Most people in the Haitian Diaspora are reacting unfavorably to his visit. “He gets the nerves. He is coming to New York just to continue to milk his daddy’s cow,” said a former supporter of Martelly, who prefers to remain anonymous. “Rally for what? - Fundraiser for what? Who the hell is advising him? - He does not even have a Prime Minister and has not yet formed a government – what the hell he is going to do with the fundraisers’ money? – This mother f… is coming to Wall Street to sell Haiti to the highest bidder” she angrily added.
President Martelly has just imposed a $1.50 on all money transfers to Haiti and he also raises taxes on all outgoing phone calls to Haiti. As we all know, president Martelly said during his campaign that he needs to create a fund so he can provide free education to all Haitian children – well, there is nothing wrong with that idea, but Haitians in the Diaspora do not want to be taken for granted or stupid. We wish president Michel Martelly good luck with the project.
Now President Michel Martelly is on a confrontation course with Haitian leaders and politicians. He has increased and reinforced security for ex-Haitian president/dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier (Baby Doc) while stripping other former Haitian presidents of their security by leaving them almost without protection.
Even the political party (Repons Peyizan) that shouldered Martelly to presidency is at odd with him these days. Haiti is crying for reconciliation now, and this is the best time to show an esprit de corps because it is the first time in Haitian history seven former Haitian presidents are currently living in Haiti where no one is in exile.
While some Martelly’s supporters continue to believe he is on the right course, other observers worry Martelly is dancing to closely with tainted Haitian figures, who might transform him into a dictator by advising him to dissolve the Haitian Parliament so he can shove his agenda into the Haitian people’s throats.
