Grand Rapids, Oct 16, 2011: Halloween will soon be here, which means children will be coming to your door. Some will be searching for candy, while others will want mischief.
The question is can you handle what may happen on, or to your property?
If you are passing out candy this year take a look around the yard and make sure it's safe for the traffic you'll be getting. Make sure you don't have any tools laying around, like rakes. It's only funny when Yosemite Sam gets hurt.
It is also a good idea to check for holes in the yard, or cracks in your pavement so that trick-or-treaters don't trip and fall on your property. You can also check railings, and miscellaneous things. Just by doing a little clean up, or making sure the path to you house is well lit can make the night go by smoothly.
When Halloween night comes, you may find out that accidents still happen despite what precautions you may have taken. Children can be clumsy, and twist an ankle. Perhaps, you thought it was a good idea to pass out apples and toothpaste. The result being a yard covered in silly string, and some damaged siding.
If you have homeowners insurance that's great, but there are a few things you should check on. If you only have coverage for named perils, ask your insurance agent if vandalism and the like is listed. If you have a homeowners policy with all risk coverage you have much less to worry about. The standard for homeowners insurance is to cover the home for twice of what it is worth; doing so helps in case of a worst case scenario.
As Halloween night draws near, keep in mind the home insurance you have, and be sure to contact your insurance agent with any questions you may have.
