Originally intended to beat eggs, mixers have been around since 1908 and was sold by the Kitchen Aid division of the Hobart Manufacturing Company. Not to be confused with a blender, mixers have sharpened blades or beaters and are used mostly for folding, mixing, beating and whipping food ingredients. Blenders, on the other hand, are used to liquefy or breakdown larger food items operating on high speed and using sharp blades. There are two types of mixers, the hand-held and the stand mixers. Hand-held mixers are typically for home-use only with a hand-held mixing device, as the name implies. Hand-held mixers can be electrically powered or manually operated. Hand mixers were introduced in 1960’s as most home users asked for a handier unit than the original counter mixers. Its compact size allows for easy storage when not in use. The body is usually made of plastic and the beaters are made of metal. It is widely available in most discount stores, retail shops, specialty cooking shops and even online.
The other type of mixer, a stand mixer, is mounted on a base. It is relatively larger and is operated by a more powerful motor. The stand bears the weight of the device and the unit comes with a bowl that can be locked in place while the motor is running.
A stand mixer can be both for commercial and home use and differentiated only by the size of the bowl. Commercial models can accommodate up to 100 quarters or 95 L of mixture while home use models can only contain about 4 quarts. Original mixers were quite large and somehow resembles today’s floor mixer. However, with its continuous gain in popularity, the size and even the price gradually decreased that by the late 1950’s most kitchen counter already included a hand mixer. It comes with a u-shape stand where the bowl can rest, mixing bowls in different sizes and capacity, a post where the motor is attached and an arm which can be raised and lowered. . It also comes with a wire whip for whipping creams and egg whites, flat beaters for batters and dough hook for kneading. To use it, you simply place the ingredients in the mixing bowl and ensure the bowl is locked. Turn the motor on at your ideal speed and blend or mix the ingredients until you reach a desired consistency.
A sturdy and dependable stand mixer comes with a very strong motor. This is particularly needed if you are going to use your stand mixer to make bread.
When purchasing a mixer, whether hand-held or stand, it will be good if you can check out reviews per brand and type online first. If the budget permits, consider going for the high-grade type that is designed for restaurant use. After all, this type of purchase is normally done once only and the item bought are typically expected to last long by most home users. Check also the capacity of the mixer and the functionality. Its ease of use and clean should also be a major consideration as mixers can get really messy.
