Hand Sanitizer Proven to be More Effective than Hand Washing

According to a recent study done by Researchers at the University of Virginia School of Medicine the use of ethanol based hand sanitizer is more effective in killing germs than regular hand washing. The ones that contain organic acids can also prevent the return of the rhinovirus from resurfacing on the hands within four hours after its use. The rhinovirus is known to cause roughly one third of common colds in adults and is often spread by hand to hand contact. The study concluded that the use of ethanol based sanitizing products resulted in 80% removal of the rhinovirus while washing with regular soap and water only removed roughly 30% of the rhinovirus.

It is common understanding that hand sanitizer should be used only when a restroom is not in reach, however, many hospitals and health care institutions require that their staff use the hand sanitizer in addition to washing their hands frequently. This is because of its known benefits in reducing the spread of germs.

The CDC (Center for Disease Control) recommends that the sanitizer contains a concentration of 60% to 95% ethanol or isopropanol alcohol for it to effectively remove 99.99% of common germs. Proper application of the sanitizer is also required to receive its maximum benefit. The CDC recommends that you apply it to the palm of your hand and rub it together. You should make sure that it covers the entire surface of both hands including the fingers. Air dry your hands instead of using paper towel.
