(Grimsby, ON January 12, 2010)
On December 9, 2010, Thomas Beach, president of Handling Specialty, appeared before the Standing Committee on National Defense at the House of Commons. He was invited to speak in reference to the study on the Next Generation of Fighter Aircraft, in specific his company’s involvement in Lockheed Martin’s Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program.
Mr. Beach told the Committee that in 2002, in his opinion, there was an industry movement towards modernizing production in the aerospace sector. Aircraft manufacturers were researching processes for lean manufacturing in order to build more efficiently and cost effectively, turning toward the automotive industry for expertise.
He went on the explain that Handling Specialty is an engineering and manufacturing firm focused on producing customized turn-key systems for complex material handling applications. His company has a long history with helping the North American automotive industry modernize and it was this experience that gave the company the opportunity to present its capabilities and ideas to Lockheed Martin.
In 2003, Handling Specialty began working with Lockheed Martin on the System Design and Development (SDD) for the JSF program and in 2004 Lockheed Martin issued its first purchase order to Handling Specialty. Since that time Handling Specialty has worked on multiple projects for various Lockheed Martin facilities in the United States.
Mr. Beach went on to explain that Handling Specialty’s relationship with Lockheed Martin and continued participation as a supplier for the JSF program has its rewards. While continuing to be a source of revenue for the company, the exposure Handling Specialty has received has lead to other opportunities for the company in the aerospace and defence sector and other industries around the world.
