Welcome visit Our WebSite:
http://allcures.com/Medicines/ A hangover generally results from drinking too much alcohol, and is characterised by a number of unpleasant physical and mental symptoms. There are theories that suggest it could also be induced by drinking too fast, whilst also possibly made worse by mixing types of drinks such as beer and wine; with the popular saying ‘never mix grape and grain’.
What are the Symptoms of a Hangover?
Hangover symptoms normally begin between four to six hours after drinking, and vary in intensity from person to person and from occasion to occasion. Symptoms typically include:
• Throbbing headache
• Dehydration and thirst
• Tiredness and lethargy
• Nausea and vomiting
• Diarrhoea
• Raised body temperature and heart rate
• Tremor
• Trouble sleeping
• Difficulty concentrating
• Anxiety and irritability
What Causes a Hangover?
Alcohol has a severe dehydrating effect by causing increased urine production. Dehydration can result in headaches, dry mouths, and lethargy. As excessive consumption can also result in sweating, vomiting, and diarrhoea, further dehydration can occur through the loss of additional fluids and electrolytes.
Alcohol is broken down by the liver into a substance acetaldehyde. This process diverts energy away from other reactions such as the liver’s ability to supply glucose to the body’s tissues. The brain therefore, receives less glucose and causes symptoms of fatigue, decreased concentration, and weakness.
It is also thought that the presence of congeners (by-products of the process of alcohol fermentation), exaggerate hangover symptoms. Dark spirits such as red wine and whisky contain more congeners than lighter spirits such as white wine and vodka, and so cause worse hangovers.
Excessive alcohol consumption will also irritate the stomach lining and intestines, causing nausea and vomiting. Other factors such as your weight and age also have an impact on the severity of your hangover.
How is Hangovers Treated?
Everyone has their own hangover cure, with some working better than others. Simple measures such as antacid liquids or tablets will help settle your stomach, whilst ginger tea has also been thought to lessen the constant feeling of nausea.
Painkillers such as ibuprofen, paracetamol, and aspirin help relieve any headaches and pain. Water, vitamin C (fruit juice or tablets) and toast are the best things to consume, whilst eggs are also effective as they contain cysteine which is thought to mop up the destructive chemicals that build up in the liver during alcohol metabolism.
It is important to get plenty of rest and avoid anything that will further dehydrate you such as caffeine. The effects of a hangover generally do not last longer than 24 hours.
The Hangover Cure Myth
Hangover cures are generally a myth as there are no particular cures for a hangover. However, there are tips for avoiding hangovers and for easing the symptoms if you have a hangover.
The best way to avoid a hangover is not to drink excessively. If you decide to drink, do it in moderation and within the recommended limits.
To minimise the risk of future serious health problems, men shouldn't regularly drink more than 3-4 units of alcohol a day. Women shouldn't regularly drink more than 2-3 units of alcohol a day.
