Happy 2be Here, also known as H.2.B.H, is leading the initiative to make organic clothing more accessible and affordable to the mainstream public.
The idea for the brand was conceived by owner Chris DiCroce, after he and a friend adopted the phrase ‘I’m just happy to be here’ as a fun way to make light of their less-than-inspiring job. Eventually that phrase took on a bigger meaning and DiCroce, along with partner Melody Puckett, took it to the next level by launching their own clothing line.
When the business began in early 2009, DiCroce and Puckett were forced to make an important decision: organic or non-organic? Both are strongly committed to an earth-friendly and healthy lifestyle, but given the state of the economy, they knew that budget-conscious customers might have a hard time justifying the added expense of purchasing an organic t-shirt over a non-organic t-shirt.
“As a consumer myself, it can be frustrating when I’m shopping, because the organic version of a product – whether it be tomatoes or t-shirts – will sometimes be double or more the cost of its non-organic counterpart and it can be tough to spend that extra money. People just can’t always afford to get the organic version, even if it is better for them.” says Puckett. “We ultimately decided we wanted to go with organic cotton and other eco-friendly materials, but we would set a price point comparable to the non-organic alternative. The best way to get people to think about making the switch to organic is to make it affordable and accessible.”
DiCroce agrees, adding, “If there were two shirts on the table and one was organic and the other was exactly like it, but non-organic, and they are both the same price, which would you choose? We want to offer a high quality, comfortable t-shirt that is not only better for the environment, but better for you. It’s not a question of ‘why should you wear organic’, it’s ‘why shouldn’t you?’”
H.2.B.H offers t-shirts and hats for adults as well as t-shirts and lap creepers for babies. Their clothing is printed with water-based inks that don’t contain PVC, phthalates, lead or any other toxic chemicals that are commonly used in traditional printing. Pricing for t-shirts is $20-25, hats are $20, and baby clothes range from $10 - $22.
