Harmful Chlorine Facts All Should Know!
Is There A Better Way to Clean and Control Mold? Yes!
Many frequently use products to clean with that contain bleach or other chloride compounds. It should be noted that health risks are involved that many are not aware. Reducing exposure to these types of cleaners can possible improve your health! Please note just a few facts first about chlorine. Unfortunately there are a host of other cleaning chemicals you should be wary of using. Just because they say “green” on the label doesn’t mean they are hands and drain friendly!
1. It is cheap to produce. An electric current is passed thru salt water producing Chlorine and caustic soda.
2. Chlorine is very toxic. It is also the unintended byproducts of chlorine (organochlorines and dioxins) that remain in the environment. They do not break down and therefore bio-accumulate. Any product containing any chloride compound cannot by definition be called “green”!
3. Household bleach and cleaners containing chlorine make up 28.4% of all calls to the Poison Control Center. Most of the emergency calls were concerning children under the age of 6 years old. (1997 stats)
4. Dioxins and other organochlorine compounds are not metabolized by the body and as such bio-accumulate in the body!
5. Since Chlorine does not break down environmentally it can be dumped in water treatment centers and 20 miles away still be active in the pipe that delivers water to your home- when you shower and drink the water the chlorine is still reacting with elements inside your body and not for the better!
6. Thanks to chlorine pollution, Americans ingest a daily amount of dioxin that is already 300 to 600 times greater than the EPA’s so-called “safe” dose
7. Studies show that 40-70 percent of the dioxin in bleached coffee filters can leach into your coffee: dioxin in paper milk cartons also leaches into the milk you drink.
8. Bleach is not an effective way to kill mold as it has no surface stability to prevent re-growth: mold can grow back in as little as 24 hours after cleaning.
9. Bleach is approx. 96 % water and as it evaporates it can become chlorine gas, which is deadly to breathe, it leaves the water behind to foster more mold growth! I refer to this as “No surface stability”
10. Chlorine gas , released by mixing bleach with any acid , may be lethal
11. Chlorine particles , according to some reports, may bio-accumulate in the thyroid leading to reduced thyroid function and possibly thyroid cancer
This listing is by no means complete. It should show you ample reasoning to do your best to avoid products containing chlorine. The health of your family, pets, staff, and guests will improve if you choose other alternatives to cleaning.
One test case showed that cleaning with bleach can be deceptive. One client of Dr. Close (MoldRx4U) called him in to do investigation into the duplex she where she resided. She was suffering from allergies and frequent bouts with sickness. She was suspecting mold since the unoccupied apartment had visible signs of mold growing on the wall. She told him that she repeatedly used bleach to “kill” mold in her apartment.
Though her apartment look clean and pristine looking, it actually tested over twice as high in mold spores as the visibly infected apartment! Mold sampling of the air showed that the bleach cleaned side was actually the dirtiest and most dangerous to live inside. This is another reason why mold air sampling by an expert can pinpoint the problems and diagnose a problem correctly.
Experts agree that cleaning with bleach actually can stir up, the invisible to naked eye, mold spores. The approach of using this toxic chemical was what actually made matters worse. Treating visible signs and not using a product that has residual control and that can remove the mold spores and also the “dead” mold spores, is just a cosmetic approach to a potentially harmful situation for you, your family, and pets! It would be much like a pest exterminator who would sell you a special fly swatter to kill cockroaches you might see running around. It may be 100% effective in killing the ones you see. It may be effective in that it works every time, but it is not addressing the ones you do not see, nor does it prevent them from multiplying behind the walls and other hiding places!
This may be a crude illustration but the point is that we are surrounded by mold spores in the air. Treating just visible growth signs may not be enough. Please read the science and documentation on my web site as to why actually cleaning the air, while you clean visible evidence is the best way to protect your family from mold health related sicknesses!
The following is part of a newsletter from MoldRx & Dr. Close. It can be view in its entirety on my web link with his company from my site below.
Is Mold Sampling Really Necessary?
Over the years, we have often heard people doing mold remediation say: “If you have water damage, or if you can see and smell mold, you already know you have a problem. You are going to have to tear out all the damaged materials, and wash everything down with a fungicide anyway. So, why waste money doing sampling?”
This “remediator’s wisdom” is wrong more often than it is right because it is based on the incorrect assumption that all mold infestations are alike. They are NOT!
More than 100,000 species of mold have been identified, and only a hundred or so are toxic. While research has linked many serious health problems to toxic mold, and more links are being discovered every day, a cleanup method may be safe for some mold infestations but that same method can be disastrous for others. And if you do not know whether you are dealing with a toxic mold or a benign mold, then you must treat every mold infestation as if it were the most toxic type of mold found on the planet. That can be very costly.
Conversely, if you treat the mold as if it is benign, then tearing out everything that has mold can actually spread the problem throughout a building. And if the materials are infested with a toxic mold species, then you could be creating a far more toxic environment, as well as a more serious and costly problem to clean up.
Let’s look at this remove-and-replace approach with a little clarity. Suppose you had aches and pains from the top of your head to the tips of your toes and everywhere in between. You go to your Doctor and say: “Doc, I hurt all over. My head hurts, my feet hurt, my knees, my hands, and my stomach. I’ve got chest pains. I get gas and heartburn frequently. I seem to be out of breath way too easily and my lungs hurt every time I take a deep breath.”
To which the Doctor responds: “No problem. We don’t need to do any tests. We’ll just remove everything that hurts.”
Would you think that Doctor had your best interests at heart? Would you trust the guy? No, probably not. Yet this is exactly what many people doing mold remediation suggest be done in buildings where mold is found.
Think of it this way: How can you possibly know what to do, if you do not know what the problem is? And how can you know what the problem is if you do not do testing and sampling?
Following are a few examples, from recent experience, that will help illustrate the importance and benefits of proper sampling.
1. At one site, the sources of mold spores in a hospital “clean room” were found through careful use of three different sampling techniques. Even with expensive HEPA filters and UV protection for the building’s air handling system, and using the EPA approved cleaners that are specifically designated for hospital clean rooms, this hospital had a mold problem. Without proper sampling, the source would not have been identified and remediated.
2. At numerous sites, including residences and commercial buildings, sampling revealed totally different mold species in different rooms. In all cases, considerable money was saved because less drastic and less expensive remediation methods could be used in the rooms that did not contain toxic mold growth.
3. At two sites, one a residence and the other a commercial property, the expense of tearing out and replacing many square yards of drywall was avoided when proper sampling showed that the mold infestations were only on the surfaces of the walls and floor.
The most important reason for inspection and sampling by a qualified professional is to ascertain whether you have toxic mold. The second most important reason is to determine whether your remediation efforts have been successful.
