WAYLAND BAPTIST UNIVERSITY APPOINTS NEW DEAN AT NEW CAMPUS LOCATION
MILILANI, HAWAII – Wayland Baptist University announces the appointment of Dr. David W. Howle as the new Executive Director and Campus Dean of their Hawai’i campus. Dr. Howle’s key responsibilities include all administration and educational programs and community outreach for the new campus in Mililani and WBU’s six military sites throughout the island.
Howle earned a PhD. in Biblical Studies from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in 1993, the fifth degree he has earned from an academic institution and has been employed by Wayland Baptist University for over sixteen years. During this time he has taught full-time in the School of Religion and Philosophy for nine years, most recently at the main campus in Plainview, Texas, and previously in Hawai’i for five years. Howle has also served as the university’s webmaster and as the Director of the Virtual Campus. Before his return to Hawai’i in October this year, he was teaching religion courses, primarily online, and estimates that he has taught over 1000 WBU students since 1995.
Howle sees a more active role for his new position at the Hawai’i campus. “For over three decades, Wayland Baptist University has conducted university education in Hawai’i and during most of this time, the emphasis has been on military students. With our move to Mililani, we envision expanding our service to the civilian population as well,” said Howle. “There are many needs that we know we can meet—education for working adults, graduate work for professionals, and concurrent courses for high school students. It is simply a matter of making the connections. We honestly want to discover how we can serve the educational needs of Hawai’i even better.”
During the Wayland Centennial in 2009, Howle researched, developed, and performed in a solo performance as Dr. James H. Wayland, founder of the university and has participated in numerous Wayland theatrical productions at the Plainview campus, both onstage and backstage. During his tenure with Wayland, he has led several church- and university-related mission trips to Kenya, Belgium, and Australia). He was also the faculty advisor for Kappa Upsilon Chi, a Christian fraternity, for four years.
As Wayland’s first fulltime webmaster, Howle designed and built two successive websites, elements of which continue to be utilized in the university’s most recent iteration. While serving as the university’s first full-time director of the online program, Howle implemented changes to the system resulting in an average 20% growth rate each year of his tenure. He has served on many committees, including as Missions Committee Chair at First Baptist Church of Plainview, Texas, and Faculty Senate President at Wayland.
Howle’s first experience with Hawai’i came in response to a call into ministry in 1983. He moved his family to the Big Island to work with college students at UH-Hilo. The return to Hawai’i in 1995 gave him a five-year experience on Oahu.
Howle and his wife of 40 years, Cathy Howle, have lived in different locations through the United States including San Antonio and Austin, Texas; Hilo and Honolulu, Hawai’i San Francisco and San Diego, California as well as Oregon. They also spent a year living in Nice, France, where he taught English at the Université de Nice. The Howles have two sons, one of whom is a Wayland graduate, living in California and in Australia, and they have three grandchildren.
WBU – Hawai’i was one of the first satellite schools to open outside of their main campus in Plainview, Texas, providing working adults the flexibility and resources to obtain Associate’s, Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Their diverse curriculum includes degrees and majors in Business Administration, Management, Education, Christian Ministry, and Public Administration with various locations on the island.
WBU-Hawai’i was recently acknowledged this year as one of the Best Places to Work in Hawaii by Hawaii Business Magazine, a finalist as one of Hawaii’s Healthiest Employers, and also been noted as having the most affordable tuition for graduate degrees according to Pacific Business News. They have also been named as a Military Friendly School according to G.I. Jobs, Military Times EDGE magazine and Military Advanced Education and recently acknowledged by Military Times Magazine as one of the top schools in the country for troops using tuition assistance.
The school recently moved from their previous site in Aiea to the new campus location at 95-1091 Ainamakua Drive, Mililani, HI 96789 and started their fall classes in October.
