Big Island Film Festival May 12-16 at Mauna Lani Resort
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) March 19, 2010 --
ISLAND OF HAWAI’I—First Johnny Depp sails in with “Pirates of the Caribbean,” then Carrie Underwood stars in “Soul Surfer” on Kauai and George Clooney descends on Oahu in "Descendants." Now the Big Island is abuzz about four more Hollywood notables appearing at the Big Island Film Festival, May 12-16, 2010 at Mauna Lani Resort. Tom Berenger, Scott Stewart, Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa and Ron Osborn add pizazz to an event that people are talking about, on Twitter, Facebook and across the film community.
BIFF will offer several public opportunities to see these gentlemen and meet them in person during the Festival’s celebrity salute cocktail receptions, screenwriting classes, special screenings and other events.
Tom Berenger’s rugged good looks have wowed audiences for more than 40 years, in legendary films like “Platoon” (for which he won a Golden Globe), “Last of the Dogmen,” “Major League” and the “Sniper” series. TV fans remember him from action series such as “Third Watch,” “Peacemakers,” and “October Road.” Originally from Chicago, Berenger majored in journalism at the University of Missouri, and started acting professionally in 1968 on “One Life to Live.” Berenger appears in the BIFF feature film entry “Charlie Valentine,” with Raymond J. Barry and Michael Weatherly, which will be screened on Friday, May 14.
Filmmaker Scott Stewart’s “Legion” was released in January up against the record-breaking “Avatar” that dominated theatres. A dark epic about the war for human survival against hordes of evil angels (with automatic weapons), the film was written and directed by Stewart with writing partner Peter Schink. Stewart, an industry veteran best known for special effects, has worked on notable films like “Blade Runner” the Final Cut version, “The Lost World: Jurassic Park,” and many more great movies. He has two new films in the works: “Priest” with Paul Bettany and Christopher Plummer in post-production, and “Psy Ops,” in development
Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa is the super-prolific actor whose iconic face graced wide-ranging action, serious and comic roles in "Mortal Kombat,” “Rising Sun,” “Johnny Tsunami,” “Memoirs of a Geisha,” “The Art of War,” “Balls of Fury" and many others. A US Army brat born in Tokyo, Hiroyuki-Tagawa got his first big break in 1987 in the epic film “The Last Emperor.” He produced and stars in “The Adventures of Chang Apana,” the true story of the Honolulu paniolo/police detective who inspired the Charlie Chan series, which will be shown at BIFF “Best of the Fest” on Sunday, May 16.
For a more in-depth interaction and learning opportunity, Hollywood writer Ron Osborn returns to BIFF to teach a screenplay class on Saturday and share some secrets of his success. Winner of last year’s BIFF Golden Honu Award for Screenwriting, Osborn’s film and TV credits include “Meet Joe Black,” the “Duckman” series, and numerous episodes of “The West Wing,” “Moonlighting” and many others. In November of 2009 his screenplay workshop in Honolulu sold out fast and fired up Hawaii writers.
The Big Island “Talk Story” Film Festival is happening May 12-16, 2010 at Mauna Lani Resort, “on location” in two luxury hotels, retail shopping center and restaurants.
