The drug industry has a lot at stake in the current health care debate. If insurers are forced to take on all applicants, they’ll more than likely lobby Washington for legislation that promotes staying healthy. This can not be something the drug industry is looking forward too. One of the insurance industry’s likely targets will be the processed food industry. This doesn’t look good for the Merck and Pfizer. These companies have a lot of money invested in drugs that combat diabetes and hypertension. They can’t afford to loose a whole new crop of customers to healthier food choices.

For example, white bread has a pretty high glycemic load (not good for pre diabetics). Imagine a bagel coming with a label warning people at risk for type 2 diabetes. Imagine if people heeded these warnings.

Much of the processed foods sold in U.S. supermarkets are loaded with sodium and sugar. Meanwhile many Americans are suffering from obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

It has long been established that diet plays a significant role in preventing these ailments. Healthier food choices would mean less people needing medication. “When we look at the health care debate, we need to look at the entire picture,” says author M.
