Heart Disease
Most coronary heart disease is found amongst the adult population but our children are showing a worrying trend and are the next at risk. What is coronary heart disease, it's when the arteries that bring oxygen rich blood to the heart become narrow, partially blocked by atheroma (fatty deposits).
Angina
Chest pain, a discomfort you feel when the heart is starved of blood and oxygen because of narrowed coronary arteries. Angina can be brought on by stress, too much physical exercise if not use to it, and it can sometimes happen when you are resting.
What Happens
A piece of atheroma (fatty deposit) within the artery breaks off and it can cause a blood clot to form. If large enough it can block the coronary artery starving part of the heart of blood and oxygen and could cause permanent damage. If this should happen a heart attack is imminent.
Are You At An Increase Risk?
Coronary heart disease is all down to certain risk factors, some of which are
* High Blood Pressure - Too much salt in you food, alcohol in excess of recommended units allowed. * High Blood Cholesterol - Too much fat in your diet (saturated fats) and is sometimes inherited. * Being Overweight - much of the above and physical inactivity. * Lack Of Exercise - Driving instead of walking somewhere, we are all guilty.* Smoking - cutting down is not enough but is a good start. * Diabetes - Always consult with your doctor. * Family History of Coronary Heart Disease - Check your family history.
What Is A Healthy Diet?
Everyone is different, no two people are the same. Just stick to a few rules, it's about what you eat and how much. Try to eat and drink more healthy foods than non healthy foods. If you want to have a burger (junk food) have one a week not one every day. Don't go on a crash diet, you'll do more harm than good. People that go on crash diets find that they only put the pounds back on at a quicker rate than what they lost them.
