A Sacramento heating expert offers his advice on what to look for in today's heating systems and what to look for in order to be a better consumer.

He's here. Old Man Winter that is, and he's not in a very good mood. Thus far the weather's been brutally cold in Sacramento and across the nation, and if you're looking to stay warm, now might be a good time to consider installing a new heating system or furnace for your home.
Shopping for new heating systems can can be very confusing, however. There are so many options to choose from, and so many variables to consider.

http://www.SacramentoHeatingandAir.com "Older furnaces may deliver only fifty to sixty percent efficiency," says Joe Bertolucci, owner of Affordable Heating and Air of Sacramento, California. "a heating system or furnace ten years old or older may be costing the home owner a lot of money in terms of lost heat and efficiency. 2011 heating systems, on the other hand, have a lot of advantages for the consumer over the older less-efficient models."
In order to compare how good a job any heating system or furnace is at heating the home efficiently, the key term to know and understand is AFUE, which stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency.
"The AFUE percentage tells you how much energy is being converted to heat. The higher the number the greater the efficiency," says Bertolucci. "Today’s furnaces and heating systems can provide over a ninety plus AFUE heating efficiency rating – far exceeding the capability of older systems. This kind of heating efficiency will save homeowners money and provide savings on monthly utility bills that will pay back the cost several times over the life of the more modern heating equipment."
AFUE should not be confused with the term “SEER” which stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio and refers to the efficiency rating of air conditioning units and not furnaces. EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) is sometimes useful because it combines the efficiencies of both the heating and air conditioning aspects of your overall system.
One important point: Don't get a system that is too big for your home or residence.
“More capacity may seem like a great idea in terms of heating your house,” says Bertolucci, “but a system that is too big or has too much capacity will cause premature wear and tear on your system. The overly large unit will heat up the house too quickly causing your system to continually turn on and off.”
A reputable heating and air contractor will take into account such factors as the size of your home, the age of your home, how much sun your home gets, your floor plan, how well insulated your home is, and how many heating hours you'll need (Sacramento has its own number of heating hours which your contractor can show you). Taking into account these variables, the heating contractor should be able to determine the right size heating unit for your particular circumstance.
Bertolucci has the following additional tips regarding heating:
*Resist the temptation to continuously turn your system on and off. Instead get a good thermostat and let it do its job.
*Get a programmable thermostat. With today's technology, you can save money with a thermostat that knows when to turn up the heat and doesn't waste energy when no one is home.
*The replacement of some parts in older systems may result in poor performance or additional strain on the system that could result in system failure and added expense.
*Have your system properly maintained and checked at least once a year. Most heating and air contractors agree that many service calls are the result of poor or improper maintenance.
*Faulty or improper duct work can often be the source of inefficient heating.
*Ensure you use a reputable and experienced heating and air contractor. Heating and air is a technical oriented profession, and studies have shown that one of the leading causes of service calls are faulty or improper installation by inexperienced HVAC contractors.
*Always ask your contractor if there are any rebate programs or special offers. Oftentimes there are special offers available from the government, the manufacturer, local utility districts (like SMUD or PG&E) or even the contractor themselves.
“There's no question that getting a new furnace or heating system is a big investment,” says Bertolucci in conclusion, “but today's heating systems are so efficient that the cost savings could begin immediately. Energy costs are going to up, not down, and preparing for the future — not to mention feeling comfortable and staying warm — is always a good idea.”
