Here Come The LED Grow Lights

We need a smarter approach to farming- one where less land is used, a method where water and energy are conserved. The introduction of the LGM550 as a horticultural light source opens up opportunities to save both water and energy. This technology is revolutionizing greenhouse propagation for commercial growers by targeting frequencies of light that plants rely on for growth, health, and appearance. Using LED plant lighting will reduce water and energy use, increase yields, extend photo period, reduce greenhouse temperatures, create a safer work place, extend the grow season, and provide solar/wind/hydro power options. How much money would you save, if you could light your greenhouse for as little as .75 watts per square foot?

Mounting above greenhouse planting beds is a snap using the LGM LEDstick mounting frames. Each frame holds four LGM550 bars with a total length of 3meters. The LGM (LED Grow Master) bars have a DC power connector on each end allowing up to 4 bars to run in series. For larger greenhouse operations, 100 bar power supplies are added. The LGM brand is designed for solar and wind powered systems but can plug right in to any standard outlet without the need for a ballast. Growers can obtain a 90% reduction in their lighting energy requirements. This number does not include the energy savings obtained by reducing cooling costs in the summer months.

LGM technology is absent the shock/fire/and burn risks associated with high voltage devices. LGM light bars operate at less than 15 degrees above ambient temperatures and are designed to operate in wet environments without fire or shock risks. The intelligent design opens up new methods to improve yield in a given area. For example, with the heat issue solved, greenhouses and indoor gardeners have the option to have multi-tiered planting beds. Both planting beds and lighting can be built into moveable frames with a simple pulley system. Three or more vertical beds can exist where once there was one. This would effectively triple biomass production in a given area and is only one of the doors opened by this technology.

Traditional 1000 watt lights are attached to bulky ballasts and reflectors, sometimes weighing 50 pounds or more. They can only be mounted one way-suspended from the ceiling and pointing toward the floor. Even if they can be hung different ways, their bulky reflectors make this a lot more difficult than you might like. Small and light weight, the LED Grow Master grow light can be positioned any way growers like. Anyone who has installed a bulky HID light will certainly appreciate the simplicity of a product that you can hang with a bit of dental floss. It is so easy- a kid can do it… and they are.

LED lighting allows a safe option for introducing gardening to children at home or in the classroom. The low wattage design allows for a light source without shock, burn, and fire risks. LGM bars do not contain, lead, mercury, or glass parts. As a teaching tool the bars have great potential. LED lighting provides a platform to teach children about photosynthesis, evaporation, propagation, biodiversity, decomposition and a wide variety of other topics with hands-on experience. The bars can be mounted easily over tables, desks, or bookshelves to put a garden in every classroom.


LED Grow Master bars are rated for 11 years of 24/7 operation with no light degradation. For those of you who are not familiar with grow lighting- this is truly remarkable. The average commercial grow light must be replaced every 18 months to remain effective. By calculating your electricity costs and bulb replacements in comparison to LED costs- the LEDs will be more cost effective in any situation. These are not the only savings to be found in the transition. Plants grown under LEDs use very little water. The rate of evaporation is decreased significantly when the radiant heat of conventional lighting is removed. Along with the reduced watering comes a decrease in nutrient use. When gardening under LEDs only- it is recommended that growers use ½ the recommended dosage of nutrients.

Advantages of LED lighting go beyond saving money. By focusing on the wavelengths that plants use, and eliminating the unnecessary wavelengths, the plants grown under LGM LEDs have amazing growth characteristics. Plants are shorter with closer internodal lengths. For instance, instead of an 18” plant with 8 branching segments- you will have a 12” plant with 10 branching segments. This allows for more plants in a given area. The wavelengths used are gentle to your plants. Flowers are very delicate, as can be seen from the spotting and edge burning they get outdoors. Richly colored rose petals fade quickly under the summer sun. This is not true when plants bloom indoors under the LED Grow Master grow light. Miniature roses have been grown with the LGM lights with blooms that were picture perfect and unblemished, with some varieties having flowers that lasted for months without change.

With all of these advantages, it's not hard to see why growers are increasingly turning to LEDs as a plant lighting source.
