Herpes & HIV Viruses Found in Illegally Imported “Bushmeat”

Evidence of retroviruses and herpes viruses has been found in illegally imported wildlife meat products.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Houston, Texas, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) January 16, 2012 -- The Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) has recently learned that evidence of retroviruses and herpes viruses has been found in illegally imported wildlife meat products confiscated at U.S. international airports. Health officials believe there is a potential public health risk posed by illegal importation of wildlife products infected with various viruses.

Besides the potential health risks posed by infected meat, many at risk and endangered species were represented in the meat confiscated by U.S. Officials. Some of those endangered species included Chimpanzees, Baboons, Guenon and Green Monkies.

According to tests conducted at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention and also at Columbia University’s Center for Infection and Immunity, “pathogens identified in the products were a zoonotic retrovirus, simian foamy viruses, and several nonhuman primate herpes viruses.”

Health officials believe that based on these results, illegally imported “bushmeat” may be a conduit for the spread of viral pathogens.

Dr. Denise McAloose, chief pathologist for the Global Health Program of the Wildlife Conservation Society said “The increase in international travel and trade brings with it an increased risk of unmonitored pathogens via the illegal wildlife trade.”

The CBCD believes that employment of disease surveillance of the illegal wildlife trade could help prevent disease emergence. This is especially true since it is believed that nearly 75 percent of emerging infectious diseases in humans originate in animals and the majority originate in wildlife.

This is also of major interest to the Center for the Biology of Chronic disease since the role of viruses…especially dormant viruses …in chronic diseases is the subject of much the center’s research.

In addition, the CBCD has long had an interest in the safe and humane handling of all animals (and in fact was in favor of shutting down all scientifically unnecessary Chimpanzee research in the United States) and believes increased efforts to cut down illegal wildlife trade is in order.

With that said, the CBCD is happy to mark biotechnology companies that develop treatments and remedies through animal friendly methods, specifically methods that do not include animal testing.

One such company is polyDNA, which developed Gene-Eden-VIR, a natural remedy that boosts the immune system against dormant viruses such as the sleeping (latent) HPV virus and the latent family of Herpes viruses, without using any animals in its research.

“The key to your health is to reduce the level of the chronic viruses in your body to harmless levels.” Dr. Hanan Polansky

The Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD, http://www.cbcd.net) is a research center recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) non-for-profit organization. The mission of the CBCD is to advance the research on the biology of chronic diseases, and to accelerate the discovery of treatments for these diseases.

The CBCD published the “Purple” book by Dr. Hanan Polansky. The book presents Dr. Polansky’s highly acclaimed scientific theory on the relationship between the DNA of latent (chronic) viruses and the onset of chronic diseases. Dr. Polansky’s book is available as a free download from the CBCD website.
