Hibakusha - A generation survives atomic bombings, witnesses looming nuclear disaster

http://forwardthinkingmuseum.com/exh_solo_hibakusha_00.php In a new online exhibit on the Forward Thinking Museum, photographer Gérard Rancinan documents the hibakusha – the surviving victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. On March 11, Japan was hit by one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded. The 9.0-magnitude seism spawned a devastating tsunami over the Japanese east coast that practically swept off the entire region. In its aftermath, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was devastated, bringing the nation on the brink of its second nuclear calamity after Japan was rampaged by the only active deployment of nuclear weapons in the history of mankind.
Rancinan took the images in 2005, the year when sixty years from the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were comemorated. His images are of even greater significance today, as the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant threatens to give rise to a new hibakusha generation.
Despite permeating with sorrow and a sense of tragedy, the images in this show stand as an example of survival in the aftermaths of a calamity of immense proportions. Moreover, Japan's rise from the rubble of World War II is in itself a source of gleaming hope that this time too, the nation will recover and thrive.
