High Profile Advisory Board
constituted for Mastech 2011
Conference to run alongside Gulf Maritime at Expo Centre Sharjah
SHARJAH
A six-member, high-profile advisory board has been constituted for the international maritime technical conference – MASTECH 2011 – that will be held alongside the region’s premier maritime engineering and technology event Gulf Maritime 2011.
The advisory board members include Capt. Jitendra Misra, Managing Director of Emarat Maritime; Mr. David Peter Short, Managing Director of Emirates Marine Services LLC, and Chairman, Institute of Marine Engineers (Dubai Chapter); Mr. Vivek Seth, Regional Director of Lamnalco; Dr Markus Voege, Vice President - Operations & Production, Drydocks World; Mr. Trevor Blakeley, Chief Executive of The Royal Institution of Naval Architects; and Mr. Joe Watson, VP-Marine, Lloyds Register.
MASTECH will be organized by MAST, an association of naval architects, at Expo Centre Sharjah from December 12-14, 2011. MAST is the Middle East alumni association of naval architects graduated from the department of ship technology, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kerala, India.
The MAST alumni association has more than 200 members working in various positions in the UAE marine industry and has excellent representation in the Middle East maritime sector.
“It’s a pleasure to welcome some of the best known names in the world’s maritime industry on the advisory board for MASTECH 2011. These are the people who have successfully charted the course for their respective establishments and have made a name for themselves in the international maritime industry,” said Mr. Saif Mohammed Al Midfa, Director-General of Expo Centre Sharjah.
“Multi-billion dollar investments in port operations across the Middle East reflect the importance of their continuing role as the most important transport sector for regional trade. MASTECH 2011 is set to be an important interface between experts in the field and the maritime workforce of the region,” Mr. Al Midfa said.
The maritime and shipping industry has successfully sailed through the turbulence of the financial slowdown and is bracing for a strong year ahead. There are around 35 ports in the Gulf region, many of which are currently undergoing expansion to meet increasing trade demand, especially with unrest spreading across North Africa.
The Middle East, which has a fleet of 2,040 vessels with combined deadweight tonnage (dwt) of 57.3 million, also has a strong order book for newbuilds, which amounts to about 10 per cent of the current fleet.
“Collapsing global trade barriers, changing geo-political relations, a new world economic order post-recession and an increasingly mobile workforce are creating opportunities and challenges for the maritime industry. The industry is undergoing changes through market consolidation and shifts in balance of world trade. This is giving rise to new corporate strategies and processes to deal with the situation and MASTECH, under the guidance of our advisory board members, will provide invaluable insights into the industry,” said Mr. Rajesh Babu, President of MASTECH.
Topics that will be discussed threadbare at MASTECH include ‘Next Generation Ships’, ‘Technical Innovations in Ship Building & Marine Engineering’, ‘Offshore, Oil and Gas Marine Heavy Lift and Transport’, ‘Clean Sea - Green Ships’, ‘Shipping Economics - Current and Future’.”
“The advisory board members, through their sheer expertise in the field, will enrich the constitution of the conference papers and propel it into a must-attend event for every professional associated with the regional maritime industry,” added Mr. Ashik Subhani, event convener of Mastech 2011.
The first edition of MASTECH in 2008 witnessed the participation of around 1,200 decision makers from across the world maritime industry and saw 24 international paper presentations from leading players of the industry.
Gulf Maritime is the region’s foremost maritime event and caters to the complete requirements of the commercial, government, and the military maritime industry.
The seventh edition of the Gulf Maritime exhibition concluded successfully at Expo Centre Sharjah on December 16, 2009 and featured 85 companies from 20 countries. The three-day event attracted 1,890 trade visitors from the maritime industry from 40 countries.
Gulf Maritime and MASTECH will be held at Expo Centre Sharjah with the support of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
