'High Risk' Groups Advised To Get H1N1 Vaccine, Despite Government Predictions

(Free-Press-Release.com) January 25, 2010 -- Ministers had previously ordered enough H1N1 vaccine to innoculate the entire country. But as the spread of the disease slows and scepticism over its impact grows, the Department of Health is considering taking measures to scale down its investment in the vaccine and is making plans to store millions of doses or donate them to the developing world.

The Governments plan is to innoculate nearly 14 million people, a number that consists mainly of children, front-line medical staff and those who are already suffering from underlying medical conditions. Around four million people have been innoculated so far.

The Chief Medical Officer for England, Sir Liam Donaldson, said: “I strongly advise that those eligible for the vaccine who have not yet had it, get the jab and protect themselves."

“Although throughout it has not been a severe illness for most people, children and younger adults have developed serious complications, been admitted to hospital and some have died. When the virus returns in the 2010 flu season those who develop complications or die will be doing so from a vaccine preventable disease.”
