In an effort to save hard earned dollars for future costs of rising college tuition fees, families previously considering private schools are now looking at public and charter school programs. A common challenge faced by families is locating a quality public school within the school district of residence, as many districts are not releasing their students.

A fusion between quality private and charter school education, I-Poly High School is a tuition-free specialized public college prep high school located on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona. Run by Los Angeles County Office of Education, which also runs the Los Angeles County High School of the Arts at Cal State L.A., I-Poly serves 500 students– offering a safe, nurturing, family-like environment.

I-Poly is a melting pot– students represent over 40 cities and come from public, private, and home school backgrounds. The school is open to students from Los Angeles, Riverside, Orange, and San Bernardino counties without need of an inter district transfer. Students must, however, meet minimum requirements, apply, and test to get in.

The curriculum centers on Project-Based-Learning– students work on major projects with themes ranging from human rights to urban planning each semester that are tied into their course work. Students develop necessary real life skills such as interpersonal communication, public speaking, and conflict management.

Personal accountability and time management are heavily emphasized within the program. Students become citizens of the world as they serve 200 hours community service as part of the graduation requirements, and learn through a global perspective.

Early college enrollment is a huge part of I-Poly. Over 40% of I-Poly students take college classes while in high school at Cal Poly or local community colleges. 94% of I-Poly students pursue higher education immediately after graduation. Recently named a 2009 California Distinguished School by the California Department of Education, I-Poly averages a 99% graduation rate.

Students interested in attending next fall as 9th graders must apply in 8th grade with the new 2010-11 application, which will be released at I-Poly’s annual Recruitment Open House on Thursday, November 19th from 6:30-8:30pm. Further information may be obtained by calling 909-869-2260, or by visiting www.lacoe.edu/i-poly.
