Newspapers of late 1800’s and early 1900’s tell the story of possibly the most popular and highly collected US coin, the Morgan silver dollar. First Morgan dollar was struck in 1878, based on a design made by George T Morgan. Morgans were struck between 1978 and 1904, and then again in 1924. Design of a Morgan dollar features a picture of liberty on the observe; according to historians George Morgan used face of Anna Williams, a school teacher as a model for this coin. Revived production of silver dollars was triggered by the Bland- Akkison Act in 1878 to help silver mining industry. On the first date of mintage over 40,000 Morgan Dollars were struck. Looking closely at this specimen, a serious coin collector can see feathers on eagle’s wings. These include 1880-CC reverse of 1878, 1880-CC 80/79 reverse of 1878, and 1880-CC 8/7 low and high 7 reverse of 1879.
Another Highly collectible Morgan dollar is 1893s, with mintage of only 100,000. This 1893S Morgan Dollar is one of the favorites at Goodoletomsgold.com. Until late 1904, Morgan dollars were struck in large quantities, with limited mintage of certain dates. Again in 1921, Morgan dollars became a favorite Christmad gift. In the second half of 1921, Morgan dollars were replaced by a new design of a dollar, called a Peace Dollar. Years later coin collectors discovered Morgan Dollar as a great collectible coin. Increased demand for Morgan Dollars surged the popularity of the coin with new appreciation for the design and history behind one of the well collected coin of American coin history.
