23 August 2011 – Global trends in fashionable eyewear will be seen at the HKTDC Hong Kong Optical Fair, taking place 3-5 November, 2011 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Prescription frames and sunglasses now play a big role as fashion accessories; variety in styles, innovation in design and a strong brand image are more important than ever in the sales of eyewear products.
Brands for Business
With this trend in mind, the 19th Hong Kong Optical Fair will feature an expanded Brand Name Gallery – a zone dedicated to branded eyewear products. In a sophisticated and eye-catching setting, buyers could expect to see quality products from international brands including Fysh UK from Canada, Xenith from France, Markus-T from Germany, Hello Kitty from Japan and a number of American brands like Betsey Johnson, John Varatos and Tart Optical etc.
Jointly organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and the Hong Kong Optical Manufacturers Association (HKOMA), the fair hosts exhibitors from all over the world. Many of these will participate in pavilions to maximise attention to products of their own country or region. In 2011, the fair is expecting group pavilions from the Chinese mainland, Germany, Japan, Korea and Taiwan etc.
New Zone for Contact Lens Manufacturers
Thanks to advancements in technology which make contact lenses more comfortable and hygienic, contact lenses are widely accepted. Further boosting sales is the capability of some models to make the wearer's irises appear larger or a different colour. In order to help industry players thrive in this market area, Hong Kong Optical Fair is introducing a new zone called Contact Lens & Accessories to facilitate efficient sourcing of such items.
International Event, Global Exposure
Last year, the fair welcomed a record number of exhibitors and visitors, with over 580 exhibitors from 21 countries & regions and over 12,000 trade visitors from 102 countries & regions.
As worldwide industry players will gather at the fair, the fair is also an excellent platform for information exchange. Numerous seminars will be held during the fair to brief attendees on the latest market trends and industry knowledge. Events include the 9th Hong Kong Optometric Conference. Specialists from Canada, Finland, Hong Kong and Singapore will share their expert insight on a number of topics on children’s eyecare under the theme “Vision for the Next Generation”. Eyewear parades will also be staged to highlight exhibits from Brand Name Gallery.
Fair organisers are also taking advantage of this major global event to stimulate local creativity by organising the 13th Hong Kong Eyewear Design Competition. Competition is fierce with over 240 entries received from local firms, and individual participants including professional designers and design students, representing a surge of 67% from last year’s participation. Under the design theme “Visionary”, entries will be judged by their originality, aesthetics, practicability and marketability. Results of the competition will be announced in mid-October. Winning entries will be on display at the fairground, giving designers exposure to international industry insiders.
