The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour (HJGT) made its annual stop at Grande Dunes RC in Myrtle Beach, SC for the Greg Norman Champions Golf Academy Junior Shootout. The tournament featured over 65 competitors who competed in five age divisions, and was ranked by the South Carolina Junior Golf Association (SCJGA) and Junior Golf Scoreboard. The Greg Norman Champions Golf Academy (GNCGA), based out of Myrtle Beach, served as the title sponsor for the event. A special thanks goes out to the GNCGA for not only serving as a title sponsor for the event, but also as a partner to the HJGT in a joint effort to effectively help every junior golfer tap into their fullest golf and personal potential. Additional thanks to the staff at Grande Dunes RC, and the head golf professional Frank Coughlin for providing the HJGT with a standout venue to hold the two day tournament. The course was prepped in prime condition all weekend, allowing for a fun and competitive event for all who competed.
In thirty-six holes of play in the Boys 15-19 Division a winner could not be determined as Johnson Holliday of Aynor, SC and Corey Martin of Mt. Pleasant, SC both finished at +1 (145). Although, all it took was one playoff hole to determine the winner to be Holliday as he shot a par versus Martin’s bogey in the playoff to take home a HJGT victory in his first tour event of 2011, giving Martin the second place hardware. Holliday came out primed to perform in his opening round finishing with a -1 (71), which featured all four of his birdies for the event. He definitely can credit this opening round score to the key to his victory, in conjunction with his ability to stay focused and determined to win in the critical one hole playoff against Martin. Holliday had some impressive statistics including shooting 86.1% pars or better, which included 27 total pars, and averaging a score of 3.95 on the par four holes. Martin was equally as impressive. Martin shot 83.3% pars or better, averaged 3.95 on the par three holes, and averaged 4.88 on the par fives. Landing in third place was Taylor Martin of Braselton, GA who shot a two day total score of +4 (74+74=148). T. Martin as well shot 83.3% pars or better and averaged a score of 4.88 on the par five holes. The winner of the Birdie Challenge in this division goes to Zachary Boe of Bluffton, SC who finished the tournament with a total of seven birdies.
A second tour win of 2011 was awarded in the Girls 14-18 Division as Emmy Martin of Odessa, FL took home the first place trophy by beating out the second place competitor Sarah Gilliard of Alma, GA by three strokes. Martin previously had won the Bobby Grace Putters Junior Open in Oldsmar, FL at East Lake Woodlands CC in late-March. It was in Oldsmar, FL where Martin posted a striking 25 pars in 36 holes of play. The key to Martin’s victory this weekend was her capability to come back from an opening round +6 (78) on Saturday to shoot a second round score of +3 (75) which placed her three strokes ahead of Gilliard. Martin shot a remarkable 72.2% pars or better, which included 21 total pars and five birdies in the two day event. Gilliard, who slipped up on the second day of play after shooting an opening round +3 (75), finished at +12 (75+81=156) for the tournament. She posted the most birdies of this division with a total of six, led with an average score of 4.88 on the par five holes, and finished with 16 total pars. Finishing in third place was Libby Crawford of Chapin, SC who shot a +18 (88+74=162). Crawford’s second round score of +2 (74) was the lowest of any competitor in the division, which played a huge role in her ability to land in third place. As previously mentioned, Gilliard finished with six birdies netting her the Birdie Challenge prize for this division.
The weekend performance by Charles Dallery of Sumter, SC in the Boys 13-14 Division was arguably the most impressive by any of the competitors at Grande Dunes RC. Dallery, who was playing in his first HJGT event of 2011 as well, posted back to back scores of -2 (70) to finish at -4 (140) for the weekend. Not only was he the only golfer to post an under par score in his division, but his consecutive two under par score days were the lowest scores of the tournament as well. Dallery finished with a tournament leading ten total birdies, as well as posting 20 total pars and averaging a score of 2.62 on the par three holes. Finishing in second was Davis Glasgow of Mt. Pleasant, SC with a respectable two day total score of +5 (75+74=149). Glasgow posted 21 pars and five birdies in his two days of competition. Rounding out the top three in this division was Kohler Karavan of Myrtle Beach, SC who finished at +12 (80+76=156) for the weekend. As stated, Dallery finished with ten birdies for the two day tournament which earned him the Birdie Challenge prize for this division.
