The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently announced that over 400 homebuilders have committed to building more energy efficient homes to satisfy updated requirements for the Energy Star program in 2012. The residential construction projects will satisfy a number of green building requirements all aimed at reducing energy consumption for private residences.
One of the most overlooked problem areas for homeowners looking to improve energy efficiency in their homes is air leakage. The average residential structure could stand to benefit from home improvements that minimize air leakage. According to the EPA, up to 40 percent of household energy consumption can be attributed to this problem. An estimated 25 to 40 percent of air leakage problems in residential properties are tied to vulnerabilities within the building envelopes. These structural issues contribute to problems like mold damage and mildew accumulation in homes.
“Using the right building envelope system technology can really translate into remarkable savings for a household,” said Nils Simonsen, President of MetalTech-USA. “In addition to appliances, homeowners must consider the structure itself and how the design affects energy efficiency.”
Millions of households have benefited from the EPA Energy Star program since it was created. Homeowners save when they purchase energy-efficient homes certified through the Energy Star program. Research shows that homeowners reap cost savings when they invest in energy-efficient appliances, eco-friendly building products, and green upgrades.
