According to the official definition of homeland security, the National Strategy for Homeland Security provides "a concerted national effort to prevent terrorist attacks within the United States, reduce America's vulnerability to terrorism, and minimize the damage and recover from attacks that do occur." National security is dependent upon protection from catastrophic natural disasters, too, so part of the US Department of Homeland Security includes the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA.
With such a diverse mission, a homeland security degree is a powerful career-building tool that opens many doors. Many criminal justice schools offer a criminal justice degree ideally suited for the public’s general perception of the job (keeping the country free from terroristic threats) but degrees in other disciplines are valuable to the department, too.
Some elements of homeland security call for expertise in many fields, not all of them related to law enforcement or counterterrorism, or at least not as they seem on the surface. Border security on land, at sea, and by air put a paralegal degree to patriotic use as knowledge of both US and international law is imperative to maintaining diplomatic relations.
Protection of the nation’s critical infrastructure, all means of transportation, and the threat and ability to deal with threats or attacks of radiological and radioactive natures require education in those areas. Biodefense and intelligence-gathering efforts require knowledge of a different nature than law enforcement on the ground or in the courtroom.
Keeping abreast of the rapidly changing nature of next-generation security and communications technologies require world-class computer forensics training for detection and to establish response plans for these threats.
A homeland security degree can take on many forms, as many forms as there are threats to the security of any nation. The people on the ground rely on their back-up team - in the offices and laboratories behind the front line - to provide the greatest degree of protection to the nation.
