DAYTON – Daniel Sandlin, a Navy veteran and Dayton native, was unemployed for almost a year before he found work as a mold operator with the help of AMVETS Career Center (ACC) and the Dayton Volunteers of America (VOA).
Upon his admittance to the VOA’s Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program, Sandlin was referred to Kelley Koons, Veterans Employment Specialist for ACC and AmeriCorps member.
Koons helped Sandlin create a resume, find job leads and fill out job applications. “Working with Daniel was a great experience because he was very determined to find work,” said Koons.
After about a month of job searching and applying to 25+ positions, Sandlin was hired at Tom Smith Industries (TSI), a plastic and injection molding supplier out of Dayton. Sandlin works on the factory line, cleaning up the product as it comes off the line and preparing it for shipment.
“I love my job. It’s a great place to work and great people to work for. I like it very much,” said Sandlin.
When he began his job search with Koons, Sandlin applied for work in a variety of industries. “I didn’t have anything particular in mind. I just knew I wanted to do something other than work in fast food, which I did for 10 years.”
Securing employment at TSI was a natural fit for Sandlin, as he also had prior manufacturing experience. He worked at the American Can Company out of Cincinnati for 10 years in multiple positions, including sheet metal fabricator and small motor assembler. TSI jumped at the opportunity to hire him.
“My advice to other veterans looking for work is to be open and honest as you possibly can about your qualifications and what you can do for the company you’re applying to because the military wins a great deal of professionalism and determination that can be translated into what you do,” said Sandlin.
