New York City's history of over 350 years deserves attention as one of the world's most magnificent cities, studied for its steady and rapid growth, its material prosperity and its generous representation of diverse ethnic groups and religion, where millions visit the city each year to see what humans, not nature, can achieve. The World Trade Center's Twin Towers was a perfect example of this. Two identical towers at 1368 and 1362 feet, 110 stories high, were constructed becoming the tallest skyscrapers in the world. Located in the heart of New York City's downtown financial district, the Twin Towers, were home to approximately 50,000 employees, attracting circa 20,000 visitors on a daily basis. On any sunny day with a clear blue sky, the panoramic view from 2WTC's observation deck, 1,300 feet above the city would be absolutely breathtaking until that catastrophic day of September 11, 2001 when ominous pillars of dark and grey heated smoke which could be seen from miles away, obscured the city’s atmosphere. The Twin Towers, one of NYC’s greatest wonders was under an attack of tremendous magnitude by terrorists where 2,750 people, including 343 FDNY’s most bravest fire-fighters perished.
In her brief memorial , Miriam Medina describes the courage and heroism of these 343 first responders in the midst of such a horrendous display of violence risking their own personal safety so that others may live . She also reflects on the suffering and agony of friends, family and relatives of the victims, that were left behind....the endless acts of kindness demonstrated by compassionate New Yorkers. September 11, 2001 is a day that will always be remembered around the world, as countries share with America the sorrow of this horrendous tragedy of innocent lives. Numerous permanent memorials have been established as a tribute to the innocent victims and heroes of 9/11 manifesting their sympathy to the American people and their opposition to the revolting acts of terrorism. Brusciano, Italy has dedicated their largest public square as "Piazza XI Settembre," a symbol in spreading the values of peace and international solidarity between peoples and cultures. A floral homage and silent prayers will be offered on 9/11 at “Piazza XI Settembre” in memory of the victims and for peace in the world.
