Brain Injury Association Celebrates Milestone Legislation
(Seattle, WA) The Brain Injury Association of Washington (BIAW) held its third annual auction, dinner and gala on Saturday night, November 14, 2009 at the Seattle Hyatt Hotel as professionals and volunteers from throughout Western Washington came to celebrate progress and offer hope and support for future projects. Earlier this year, BIAW spearheaded the passage of the first comprehensive legislation in the nation that requires youth athletes who exhibit signs of a concussion to be evaluated by a medical professional before returning to play.
Jason Barber, President of the Board of Directors of BIAW was grateful for the outpouring of help and support. “Tonight’s success will help us in our mission to increase public awareness, support, and hope for those affected by brain injury through education, assistance, and advocacy,” said Barber. “Our vision is a world where brain injury is prevented, and every person already affected by its impact benefits from resources that maximize the quality of life.”
BIAW honored Richard Ellenbogen, MD, FACS and Governor Christine Gregoire, Honorary Co-Chairs, along with NY Times best-selling author Lee Woodruff and her husband Bob Woodruff of ABC News, who was seriously injured by a roadside bomb that struck his vehicle in Iraq. Other honorees included Janet Mott, PhD, who received the organizations Lifetime Achievement Award and Richard H. Adler, JD, winner of the 2009 BIAW's Advocacy and Leadership Award.
The auction featured some incredible and unique items, including dinner for two at the Executive Mansion with Governor Christine Gregoire, a one-week stay in Cabo, Mexico, and signed jerseys from Ken Griffey Jr. and Ichiro.
April Brown, the evening’s auctioneer was honored to be a part of this wonderful celebration. “BIAW has done so much for so many, raising the awareness of brain injuries and advocating for individuals and their families,” said April. “The support tonight was truly overwhelming!”
