"Mending Wall," poem by Robert Frost is about walls (barriers, fences) that are no longer necessary, that exist just because they always have, and because no one has the presence of mind to challenge their purpose.
When we experience emotional hurt, such as fear, shame, or pride, our first impulse is to hide the hurting parts from, others, and even ourselves.
Oftentimes, during childhood we learn to protect ourselves in threatening environments. Hiding our injuries and frailties, we become isolated from the very things we need in order to heal and mature. What served as protection during childhood becomes a prison as an adult.
